Project summary:
Before the introduction of the Forest Practices Code, there was a requirement for every coupe planned for felling to have been surveyed for floristic values. Many such coupes lie within the Warra LTER site and the botanical survey documents are archived accordingly. For example, “Pre-logging botanical survey Report 4” lists 67 species of vascular plant for coupes WR011A and WR012A, 25 of which are endemic. In the absence of a statewide classifcation of wet forest types, it was not possible to assign a conservation status to these forests. It was suggested that the road and logging operations may exacerbate myrtle wilt in the surrounding mixed forest and increase the incidence of fire escaping into adjacent vegetation. Weeds will also be intriduced. The likely effect on surrounding mative forests is unknown, as is the possible introduction of Phytophthera. Report 12 lists 89 species of vascular plant (20% endemic) for the coupe WR009A (36 ha) in 43 families in six basic communities from wet sclerophyl to mixed forest, rainforest and riverine scrub. The commercial forest was dominated by Eucalyptus obliqua. Some selective logging had already taken place by the time of the surveys. It was suggested that the callidendrous rainforest and Huon pine riparian scrub communties, which were inadequately reserved at the time, should be protected by streamside reserves and fire kept at least 100m away.
Methodology: Coupes WR011A and WR012A were surveyed in December 1986 and WR09A in October 1987. Species lists were prepared for the sites and community changes noted and 15 formal plots placed for detail of floristics and forest structure in defined communities.
