Project type: Professional
Project status: Completed

Project summary:

Studies on the effects of forestry practices on stream invertebrate and fish populations were initiated in a selectively logged coupe at Warra scheduled for later clearfelling. Invertebrate drift samples and measurements of pH, temperature and conductivity were taken from the nearby Tomalah, Kroanna and Truggara Creeks over a two year period, to give suitable baseline data.

The results showed differences in species diversity, richness and abundance between each creek, with Tomalah Creek having a very diverse fauna. The project was not completed as the coupe was not logged due to the Helsham Inquiry. During the course of the project, small populations of the freshwater crayfish (Astacopsis franklinii) and the climbing galaxias (Galaxias brevipinnis) were recorded and considerable data were also collected on the larval stages of caddis-flies (Trichoptera).
