Project name: Caddis-fly species composition and distribution in the SW Wilderness World Heritage Area
Year started: 1989
Project number: WRA010
Primary investigator: Arturs Neboiss
Other investigator(s): Jean Jackson, Ken Walker, Stuart Chilcott
Enquiries: warra.enquiries@forestrytas.com.au
Organisation(s): Inland Fisheries Commission (Tasmania), Museum of Victoria, University of Tasmania

Project summary:

Published data on Trichoptera (caddis-flies) from the Tasmanian World Heritage Area, supplemented by information obtained mainly from material collected during expeditions to the Lower Gordon river area between 1965 and 1974 and Wildlife Research Expeditions to the South-west in 1988, are tabulated in the report. Distributions are discussed and it is found that 131 species (79%) of the 166 Tasmanian species are within the World Heritage Area. A total of 55 species were identified from the Warra site.

Methodology:

Seven sites in part of the Huon River and its tributaries eastward from the World Heritage Area boundary to the Arve River junction were investigated (using light traps) between 1965 and 1974 by Riek and Neboiss to which is added later data collected by Chilcott (1988), providing baseline data before harvesting of the forest.
