Project summary:

This project aimed to extend the availability of data on coarse woody debris (CWD) volumes, size-class distributions and decay class distributions for Tasmania’s Southern wet eucalypt forests. Accurate data are needed in order to adequately model CWD dynamics in response to natural and human-induced disturbances, past, present and future. This project assumed especial significance given the planned incorporation of a fuelwood power station into the Southwood Huon Wood Centre development.

A parallel program of line intersect sampling is being implemented in predominantly regrowth forest classes by Forestry Tasmania’s district inventory team, as part of their programme of temporary inventory plot measurement. The data derived from the district programme will gradually complement the data derived from this more intensive survey of old-growth forest plots.

Methodology:

CWD was assessed at several dozen randomly located plots within the main old-growth wet eucalypt forest classes present in the Southern Forests. At each plot, a multi-stage line intersect survey was conducted, comprising an equilateral triangle whose sides are each 100 m. All CWD down to a diameter of 10 cm was recorded, and the decay class of each piece also noted on a scale of 1 to 5.
